This anthology has been conceived to provide mandolin students with a pedagogical pathway that strikes a balanced approach between technical study and musical practice, through a selection of twenty-five pieces drawn from Italian musical production of the historical twentieth century.
The collection comprises twelve studies selected from some of the most significant mandolin methods, namely those by Carlo Graziani-Walter, Vittorio Monti, Carlo Munier, Giuseppe Sgallari, and Silvio Ranieri. Interspersed among the studies are thirteen recreational pieces of easy to intermediate difficulty, selected from dances and works intended for practical music-making. Particular prominence is given within this second group to the five dances by Francesco Tentarelli, some of which are explicitly intended for “advanced beginners”, together with mazurkas and waltzes by Elisa Zarattani, Giulio Bertocchi, Luigia Ugolini, Rodolfo Luise, Guglielmo D’Ambrosio, R. Guastamacchia, Dante Spaggiari, and Francesco Amoroso.
The studies were selected not solely according to their level of difficulty, but also with regard to the specific techniques that each exercise enables the student to develop. The collection therefore includes exercises devoted to the downstroke and upstroke, the coulé or sliding of the plectrum from one string to another , position changes, and the retention of a finger on the string, [..]
